Dog lovers, take a moment of silence today in memory of Laika.

Sure, you're happy now...

Today is the anniversary of Laika’s death, the result of being the first living thing sent into orbit without any hopes of survival.

Laika was a stray back in the 50’s and she competed with two other dogs, going through various trainings in order to be sacrificed in the name of human progress. She had an even temperament and did not quarrel. Life on the streets of Moscow proved that she could handle tough conditions, like confrontations with 6 foot rats, or more realistically, harsh, cold winters. Before the launch, one of the scientists took Laika home to play with his children, noting that he wanted to do something nice for her since the end of her life was near.

But don’t be sad for Laika or even angry at the Russians for sending a dog into space (regardless of your position on animal testing) without the technology to deorbit and therefore knowing that this was a one-way ticket.

That's right, a reference to The Abyss!

Instead, we should honor the life of this dog who would otherwise be lost to history. If she wasn’t chosen we never would have known her and instead we’d be talking about dogs named Anastasia or Oksana. Or Yakov Smirnoff.

“I like American women. They do things sexually Russian girls never dream of doing - like showering.”
